I'm Sharon, Nora's twin nine years late. It's true, we think very similarly so when I need validation for anything in my life, I call Nora and she supplies it.
I live on the East Coast with my Husband of 10 years and 4 kids (9,7,4,2). I grew up in Utah but haven't lived there since 2005. After graduating from college we lived in Michigan for six wonderful years (for my husband to do more school) and have lived in Maryland for two years. We'll see where we'll land next. I stay at home with my kids and love the three Rs: Running, Reading, and Relaxing......and talking on the phone and Netflix.
For February I made a birthday banner for my family. I actually got the idea to do this many years ago. We love to celebrate birthdays with a fun cake, streamers, and balloons. A reusable banner would be a perfect and practical addition. I knew exactly what kind of fabric I wanted to use and I even found a couple tutorials here and here (I ended up merging the two tutorials together to make by banner). But then.....nothing!
After my first baby was born my dear Mother-in-Law offered to buy me my first sewing machine. I remember going to the Singer Store by my house and picking it out and working on my first projects. I made quilts for my boys beds, baby gifts, bags, etc. I had a good friend who was project motivated and pulled me along. Years have gone by, my friend lives far away, I have been blessed with more kids, and the sewing started to die off . I realized I didn't sew anything fun in 2013 (I did patch some pants for my boys) . What happened? Excuses. I love this talk by President Uchdorf. My favorite part below:
"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.
Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.
Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty—and I am not talking about the process of cleaning the rooms of your teenage children."
I know that I am the best person, mom, friend, daughter, and neighbor when I dedicate time in my life to create things. It doesn't have to be sewing but creating anything does wonders for my soul. Thanks to Project(s)Connect (and THREE upcoming family birthdays) I decided to "create" and make the banner. It's embarrassing how easy this was. I went to Joanns and purchased seven fat quarters, bias tape, heat n' bond, and I was ready to go (total cost was under 15 dollars). It took me three days with a few hours each day and it was done. I am very happy with the results and my kids love it too.

Such a brilliant idea! I really admire how you make your kids' birthdays a big deal! because it IS a big deal! Beautiful banner and you're inspiring me to start creating, and I've even been looking at sewing machines lately. Yes, I'm THAT behind in the times! Nice job!
Quoting the Silver Fox ...unorganized matter...into a thing of beauty...such a good one...And there's a reason the town of Downton Abbey (not the name of the town) was decked in bunting for Mary and Matthew's (rip) wedding. It's so festive! Love the product Sharon, and your Lucy is A -Dor-Able!
Time and a season, you're not behind, you're now looking ahead.
It's sooo colorful! I need to replace my Target paper one with something like this. Love it!
Silver Fox and Downton Abbey in the same breath! Sharon, I love the rainbow hues. Your room and daughter are darling.
What a beautiful, festive banner! Your family will get so much enjoyment out of that for years to come.
Donna!! You are ALWAYS creating, remember the troll house you created out of nothing? And think of landscaping, your are designing useful beautiful spaces for people. I even still wear the earrings you made me for my birthday almost every Sunday!
That is darling and what a quick, fun way to decorate for birthdays. Thanks for sharing President Uchdorf's talk. I think it can be so easy to neglect that part of us that longs to create. Often times in my life I find myself feeling it is a luxury only to be enjoyed once all the other tasks are complete, but let's be honest...are tasks every really completed!? This is such a good reminder to take time to nurture and develop those innate parts of us. Now, if I can just find a general authority talk on the importance of eating copious amounts of chocolate and drinking lots of Diet Coke, I can move forward without a guilty conscience.
It turned out great! I love the rainbow colors!
I love it! That turned out so cute! And it will make your kids feel so special on their birthday's when the banner comes out. I really love that talk too. I agree, I am happiest when I am creating. I've been pretty crabby this week (lack of sleep I tell you!) and decided that I needed to pull out the sewing machine and it has really helped me change my mood. You're little girl is darling! Way to go Sharon!!
I love it! Now I think I need a sewing machine...
Wow Sharon, I never knew you were such a great seamstress. Great job! I live in NH. Only 10 hours or so from you. :)
Love it Sharon! I've been wanting to do something like this for years, and now I have the links to help me out-- thank you. I did make one out of paper years ago, but paper....? It just didn't last! So fun to get an update on you and your sweet family. Nine years younger? Really? You always seemed so mature! :-). Have a happy day and look forward to next month's post.....
Absolutely adorable. Love the rainbow colors!! I will definitely have to make one before we start birthday season in the Sutton house
So fun! We love birthdays! And I LOVE your blue walls. I used to have blue walls in my kitchen/family room and then we painted them a boring tan. I miss those happy walls!
Yes!! Especially with the Diet Coke, I've only recently become a "one-a-day" addict and have no plans to stop!
I have the parts of one laying around.... I might just go dig it up right now! Yours turned out so cute!
What a fun birthday tradition your children will remember always!
so cute!
